I very much dislike the term ‘special needs' to me it describes some kind of a' them and us situation'. I much prefer to call our persons with intellectual disability - persons who have a learning difference. Certainly from my own experience, with my own son, he has taught me so much about the world and how I can change my perspective to make things better. Taking a different viewpoint when observing how our persons behave, how they try to communicate their needs and how we respond to that. They are not persons to be feared. When I was a child, the attitude was very different; indeed they were persons to be feared. It wasn't really understood that with early intervention their ability could be brought to the fore, rather than focussing on their disability.

My own son was introduced to complementary therapies when he was nine years old. With the help of my excellent first teacher, we taught him how to recognise when he was stressed and how to ask for a treatment of his choice. It started with back massage and then to Reflexology and many other therapies.

The Serenity Reflexology course, is designed to encourage therapists not to be fearful of working with persons with learning differences. To help build up our confidence and competence and not be afraid to ‘ have a go'.
